Who we are

On 1st April 2002 our founders, Jonathan and Katharine Barnett, realised their business dream by launching Fuel Storage Solutions from their spare bedroom in Rastrick, Brighouse. Over twenty years on, FSS is established as one of the UK’s leading and most well-respected fuel system solutions providers, whilst remaining a privately-owned family business. Our company is headquartered in Thornton village, at the heart of Bronte country, in a former Methodist chapel which we fully restored and converted to provide the platform for sustained growth. From this base in the North of England we supply services across the British Isles and Ireland, including remote locations such as the Hebrides and the Highlands of Scotland. We also work in the Falkland Islands.

We aim to be a company that acts with integrity and in the best interests of all our stakeholders whether they are our employees, our clients, our suppliers or the public in general. We will always strive to empower each other and to encourage ownership, accountability and responsibility through a culture of stability and security. As a company that is based on a set of environmentally angled legalisation, our focus is to protect the environment. We are proud to employ a large number of veterans, obtaining the Bronze Armed Forces Covenant in 2020 and the Silver award in 2021.

Our dedicated Fuel Storage Solutions Team

How we’ve grown

Initially our company’s primary services centred around the safe storage of fuel and oil, working within strict regulatory OFTEC standards. Over time, as we became a recognised brand, clients began to request support and other subsidiary services in response to more comprehensive fuel storage briefs. As a result, and to support them, we expanded our range of services, offering associated environmental safeguards, pipework and redundancy products, helping to establish and maintain our leading position in the Fuel Industry.

Focusing on the safe storage and supply of liquid fuels has cemented our reputation and seen our company partner with many UK blue chip companies. Ensuring that all our solutions surpass the standards required by the relevant regulations has been a key factor in winning and maintaining our larger contracts. Growing from a start-up operation to a larger enterprise we gained an understanding of commercial fuel supply at all levels, fulfilling arrangements with smaller businesses in our formative years. Thanks to our flexible approach, we now have the skills to work with operations of any size – there is no contract that is too large or small for our accomplished designers and engineers.

Complete Proprietary Solutions

Fuel storage, like many business functions, is not an exact science. Most organisations have sites that require unique considerations – not only because of the fuel supply requirements, but due to environmental factors. One of our main strengths is working alongside clients to construct proprietary solutions that offer unrivalled performance in terms of security, economy and reliability. To accommodate this approach, we have developed a number of in-house products and systems including:

  • APIApipeTM bunded pipework – our patented system for safe storage and use of liquid fuel
  • Mobile and high-capacity polishing rigs
  • Tank cleaning systems
  • Maintenance packages
  • Fuel tanks

These can then be deployed together with the surveying and engineering expertise necessary to meet the demands of any fuel storage requirements.

Our Team

Fuel Storage Solutions was founded by senior directors Jonathan and Katharine Barnett in April 2002. Teamwork and the people in our business are what make us the force that we are today:

Jonathan Barnett, Managing Director Jonathan’s previous career successfully spanned work for petroleum giants including Shell, BP, Esso and Total testing the integrity of underground tanks. His problem solving approach to his role best places him to resolve complex issues arising when developing fuel storage installations.  His innovative approach and ideas led to the creation and development of our patented APIApipeTM.

Katharine Barnett, Finance Director Katharine brings financial acumen gained at PriceWaterhouseCoopers where she was a Chartered tax advisor in their Leeds office, and legal acumen as a result of her training.  That, along with her attention to detail allows her to guide the non-technical side of the business function.  Her role goes far beyond simply Finance.

Vince McCarry, Operations Director Meng, MIET Vince started with Fuel Storage Solutions in March 2017 as Operations Manager with the additional responsibility of increasing sales and productivity. This appointment was made on the back of his proven track record in Engineering both in the UK and US. Vince’s extensive knowledge of systems and processes was gained through his study of Kaizen and similar business philosophies.  His engineering expertise is best illustrated through his membership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. In August 2020 Vince became our Operations Director as a result of his commercial acumen, hard work and dedication to FSS.
