Carbon Reduction Policy

At Fuel Storage Solutions Limited (FSS), we recognise the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimising the environmental impact of our business.

As a UK SME operating in the fuel storage, fuel systems and engineering sector, our activities include office operations, engineering work, travel, procurement of materials and equipment, and work undertaken at customer sites. We are committed to reducing the carbon emissions associated with these activities through practical, measurable and continually improving actions.

Our approach

Our carbon reduction programme is built around five key principles:
• Measure – We monitor our energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and are working to improve the quality of our carbon data.
• Reduce – We identify the principal sources of emissions within our control and take proportionate action to reduce them.
• Improve – Carbon reduction is considered when we make decisions about vehicles, buildings, equipment, materials, procurement, travel and business processes.
• Engage – We encourage our employees, suppliers and contractors to contribute to reducing our environmental impact.
• Be transparent – We aim to ensure that our environmental and carbon-related claims are accurate, clear and supported by appropriate evidence.

Measuring our carbon footprint

We are progressively improving the way we measure greenhouse gas emissions arising from our operations.

Our focus includes:

Scope 1 emissions
Such as fuel used in company vehicles and directly controlled heating and fuel consumption.

Scope 2 emissions
Principally purchased electricity and other purchased energy.

Relevant Scope 3 emissions
Where data is reasonably available and proportionate to our business, including business travel, employee travel, purchased goods and services, waste and other significant supply-chain emissions.

Where appropriate, we use the latest UK Government greenhouse gas conversion factors, and where precise activity data is unavailable, reasonable estimates are recorded with the basis for those estimates.

What we are doing

1. Energy and facilities

We seek to reduce energy consumption across our offices, workshops and other facilities.  we will do this by monitoring energy use, avoiding unnecessary heating and lighting, using energy-efficient equipment, improving building efficiency and considering renewable energy solutions where commercially and operationally appropriate.

2. Vehicles and engineering fleet

Because our engineers travel extensively to customer and project sites, vehicle fuel use is an important consideration.

We are seeking to reduce emissions through:

  • Effective route planning
  • Combining site visits
  • Avoiding unnecessary journeys
  • Encouraging efficient driving
  • Monitoring fuel consumption
  • Considering the purchase of lower-emission, hybrid and electric vehicles as our fleet is replaced.

Operational safety, vehicle capability and customer requirements will always be considered alongside environmental performance.

3. Business travel

We aim to reduce unnecessary business travel by making effective use of video conferencing, remote meetings and digital collaboration. Where travel is necessary, we consider practical lower-emission alternatives, including public transport and rail where appropriate.

4. Engineering and site operations

We plan our work to:

  • Minimise repeat visits
  • Consolidate deliveries and site attendance where practical
  • Avoid unnecessary vehicle and equipment idling
  • Maintain equipment efficiently
  • Consider lower-carbon alternatives where they meet the required technical, safety and performance standards.

5. Materials and procurement

We consider environmental factors when purchasing materials and services.  Considerations include durability, repairability, reuse, recycled or recyclable content, packaging, transportation and supplier environmental performance.

We also seek opportunities to reduce material consumption and work with key suppliers to identify better environmental information and lower-carbon alternatives where appropriate.

6. Waste

We apply the waste hierarchy wherever reasonably practicable:

Prevent → Reduce → Reuse → Recycle → Recover → Dispose

We seek to prevent unnecessary waste, reuse materials and equipment where safe and appropriate, segregate recyclable waste, reduce packaging and ensure waste is handled and disposed of responsibly.

Carbon Reduction Targets

We will use our organisational carbon baseline to develop appropriate reduction targets.

Our initial priority is to establish reliable Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions data and identify the principal sources of emissions. We will then set realistic and measurable objectives that reflect the size, structure and growth of our business.

We will review these targets periodically to ensure they remain relevant and meaningful.

Our employees and supply chain

Everyone at FSS has a role to play in reducing our environmental impact. We encourage employees to avoid unnecessary journeys, use energy responsibly, reduce waste, recycle, reuse materials where appropriate and identify opportunities for further improvement.

We also recognise that some of our environmental impact sits within our wider supply chain. Where proportionate, we consider suppliers’ environmental practices, carbon information and reduction initiatives and encourage our contractors and suppliers to identify practical opportunities to reduce emissions.

Honest and responsible environmental claims

We are committed to making environmental statements that are accurate, clear, specific and supported by evidence.

We will not describe our business, products or services as “carbon neutral”, “net zero” or equivalent unless such claims are supported by appropriate evidence, a defined methodology and a credible plan.
